Rev. Protopresbyter Nicholas V. Gamvas, D.Min., Ph.D.
Fr. Nicholas V. Gamvas is a 1979 graduate of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, MA. Fr. Gamvas was born and raised in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He has been in ministry for over 30 years, a priest for 28. He has a daughter Maria Gamvas, who has completed her undergraduate degree at BU and also most recently her graduate degree a Masters at UMASS, Amherst. In addition to Father Nicholas' undergraduate and graduate degrees from, UNH, Holy Cross, ANTS, USW, and post doctoral studies at Harvard, in Theology; Fr. Gamvas has earned a Doctorate in Ministry and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. He is a member of several related professional associations. He has published a book and several articles. Fr. Nicholas was elevated to Protopresbyter, by (his spiritual father), His Eminence Metropolitan Maximos of Pittsburgh, on February 15, 2009 at St. Haralambos in Canton Ohio.
He is a former Marine Biologist (with NAI Environmental Consultants) and a former Chaplain, with the Veterans Administration and a1LT in the US Army National Guard (NHARNG 1st Bn 172 FA). His interests and hobbies include sports and Martial Arts. Fr. Gamvas has studied the Martial Arts for over 53 years, earning Black Belts in Shorinji- Ryu, Shotokan, Kickboxing, Tae Kwon Do, and Jiujutsu. A student of Shorinji-Ryu for over 50 years, he has earned a 7th Degree Black Belt in that style of Karate. In 1994 he was inducted into the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame as a Shihan Sensei. He currently and for the last 12 years, is a practitioner of Taiji Chuan (Yang Style) and Qi Gong. He is a Black Belt member of IMAF, NIMA, and USKA.
Fr. Gamvas has previously served at the following parishes: Assumption, Manchester, NH, St. Demetrios, Fort Worth, TX, and Sts. Constantine & Helen Cathedral, Honolulu, HI, and Maui Mission, HI.
